DISTRESS AND EMERGENCY SITUATIONS
Funding of schooling for three young children in Mali
Commitment
Since 2016
Target country
Mali
Context
Since 2016 and the sudden death of Ms Bakarissa Sangaré, Dodo’s wife, a packer at AOM SARL – SIIM’s partner for mangoes from Mali, the Louis Omer-Decugis Foundation has been financing the school fees (school supplies, school meals, etc.) of her three young children: twin daughters aged 11 (Fatimata and Bintou) and a 9-year-old boy (Amani-Emmanuel). This funding will follow the children until they complete their studies and/or come of age. It was decided that Mr Moktar Fofana would play the role of Big Brother in collaboration with the children’s father to ensure the proper use of the funds paid and the continuation of the children’s education.
In 2021, the children were still enrolled in the second cycle in the Malian school complex of Tiona-Sikasso in the 7th year for the twins Fatimata and Bintou and in the 4th year for Amani-Emmanuel. They have achieved satisfactory results over the year as evidenced by their school reports to the Foundation in the summer of 2021. They ended the year with the following rankings: 12th and 19th out of 63 for Fatimata and Bintou, 12th out of 50 for Amani-Emmanuel.
The 2020-21 school year was disrupted again with a delayed start in mid-November 2020; it ended in August 2021. This was due to the Covid-19 epidemic in 2020 and the ensuing teachers’ strike.
